Relieving Discomfort Naturally: Our Top 4 Essential Oils for Pain Relief

We see a LOT of people with discomfort in the studio. Like, a LOT. Whether it’s a chronic condition or just a little niggle it can still interfere with your day and cause you physical and mental upset.

What we find is that most people don’t want to take medications for it long term (and if fact, you shouldn’t! Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs — NSAIDs — are not recommended to be taken for more than days at a time) but EVERYONE wants relief!

So here are our TOP 4 FAVOURITE essential oils that we use in the studio to attack inflammation naturally and give relief to our clientele.

Frankincense

The King of Oils. For good reason!
As well as being known for its anti-aging benefits (beautiful in your skincare regimen), killing germs and bacteria, decreasing stress and boosting the immune system, frankincense is also a great essential oil to use to support inflammation!

While most of the research to date has been conducted on Frankincense extract rather than the essential oil (yes, there is a difference) it shows a heck of a lot of promise and I for one am excited to see more emerge in the near future.

Copaiba

100-foot copaiba trees are found in the Amazon rainforest and have been used for hundreds of years by Amazonians for their medicinal properties.

You might have heard the buzz of people comparing the benefits of copaiba essential oil to cannabis oil? Let me set this straight – cannabis and copaiba are COMPLETELY different plants. Copaiba contains no marijuana or hemp. BUT where the comparison comes in, is with them both containing the anti-inflammatory beta-caryophyllene and in fact, copaiba contains WAY more of it!

It’s for this reason that copaiba is talked about being one of the natures most powerful anti-inflammatories. It’s investigated further in an interesting study here.

Wintergreen

The predominant natural ingredient in wintergreen oil is methyl salicylate, which is a compound closely related to acetylsalicylic acid, or aspirin. For this reason, wintergreen is known for its analgesic properties. It’s a super potent oil! It is present in the Ice Blue blend mentioned below and combined with peppermint and the other oils for maximum benefit out of minimal dosage – clever huh? Even natural substances need to be used in moderation.

Ice Blue

This is an exclusive blend of essential oils and probably our most used essential oil in the Pilates studio. This blend was specially formulated to reduce inflammation and the side effects that go with it. This baby comes in a 5ml and 10ml oil, or our personal favourite, a tube of cream which spreads easily over the affected area!

All of these oils are best applied topically over the affected area, however, copaiba can also be taken internally in small doses if you choose. For topical application, dilute 2-3 drops for adults with fractionated coconut oil or your favourite carrier oil and say hello to relieving massages!

Please note: I’m no doctor and these aren’t drugs! In case you have any allergies or are taking existing medications you should, of course, get medical clearance before trying natural alternatives.
