Cancer Rehab Awareness Week: Shedding Light on Holistic Recovery

From the moment of a cancer diagnosis, there are countless battles fought, victories celebrated, and challenges overcome. Yet, amidst the focus on treatments and therapies, one aspect often overlooked is the crucial role of rehabilitation in restoring health and well-being post-cancer. Cancer Rehab Awareness Week 2024, aims to shed light on why cancer rehabilitation is crucial for holistic recovery.

There are 44 million cancer survivors worldwide and 18.1 million new diagnosis each year. A Macmillan survey concluded that more than 70% of people diagnosed with cancer say they’re struggling with physical side effects 1-10 years after treatment. Add to that, a staggering 25% - 47% of women are diagnosed with lymphedema post breast and vulval cancer, a lifelong and debilitating condition.

We can do better.

The journey through cancer is not merely a physical battle; it's an emotional and mental upheaval as well. From the time of diagnosis, individuals face a whirlwind of emotions – fear, uncertainty, and anxiety become constant companions. While treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery target the disease itself, they often take a toll on the body, leaving behind a trail of physical and functional impairments that for some, can be a lifelong and daily reminder.

Some of the side effects commonly experienced by our clients include:

  • Fatigue

  • Pain

  • Restricted movement

  • Lymphoedema

  • Neuropathy

  • Cognitive impairment

  • Weight gain/loss

  • Psychological distress

This is where cancer rehabilitation steps in as a beacon of hope.

Through tailored rehabilitation programs, either one on one or in small groups, we are equipping individuals with the tools and strategies to manage these challenges effectively, enabling them to live life to the fullest.

So, as we reflect on the significance of Cancer Rehab Awareness Week, let us reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every individual affected by cancer has access to rehabilitation services. It's not just about surviving cancer; it's about thriving beyond it – reclaiming joy, purpose, and vitality.
