Beyond Detection: The Many Health Benefits of Breast Massage
While breast checks and self massage has become more widespread in the fight for early detection of breast cancer, breast massage benefits extend FAR beyond just ‘detecting abnormalities’. I’ve listed a few of the other important health benefits below.
Detecting Abnormalities
This is probably the most obvious benefit and most widespread message currently for early detection of breast cancer. In 2022, it is estimated that women have a 1 in 8 chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 85. These numbers are alarmingly high! The good news is that this type of cancer has a high survival rate BUT I know first hand from working with women post treatment that this cancer type also has a very high (approx 50%) incidence of post treatment issues such as pain, reduced range of motion and Lymphoedema.
In saying that, this isn’t meant to be all doom and gloom, but it IS meant to emphasise the importance that early detection of abnormalities is vital. So feel away for any unusual lumps, bumps, changes in texture, colour, temperature or nipple changes. Breasts are inherently lumpy and unique so the closer you get to know your own girls, the better! And if you notice any changes or have any concerns, see your medical professional about them.Ease Discomfort / Muscle Tension
Sore boobs around your period?
Chest, neck or shoulder pain?
Breast massage may help! Whether it’s an excess of fluid or related to the pecs (muscles under your breasts) breast massage may help alleviate the tension or discomfort you are feeling.Lymphatic Drainage
I’m big on this one.
Lymphatic drainage is important for good health, drainage of toxins, cell transport, immune function, the list goes on…
Breast tissue extends its little wing to the upper and outer quadrant of our chest to our armpit – right into the area of our beloved lymph nodes for drainage. Coincidentally (or maybe not), this is the area where most cancers are found. Lymphatic drainage requires MOVEMENT, and so often we strap our breasts down all day under a bra and don’t give them a chance to dance. Breast massage is a perfect way to enhance proper lymphatic drainage of the breasts and chest area.Build Mind/Body Connection
Something that’s so easily overlooked and yet, something that is so so important for well-being.
How well do you know your body?
How often do you sit in gratitude for the amazing vessel that you’re living in each day?
How often do you ground down and show yourself some love and appreciation?
Building mind/body connection not only deepens our connection to ourselves and offers positive mental health benefits but it also tunes our internal compass to know when something is not quite right so we can detect changes and modify our behaviours or actions accordingly, for better health in our mind, body and soul.
So there you have it, I hope at least one of those is enough evidence that this is a practice you should incorporate into your life, your health will thank you for it!
